How we work

Four stages. One contract. No hand-offs between studios.

1

Discovery

One working session. We pressure-test your concept against cost, materials, and MOQs before you spend a cent on samples.

Week 1
2

Design & patent

CAD, pattern-making, and a utility/design patent filing where there's something worth protecting. You own the IP outright.

Week 2 to 4
3

Sampling

First-pattern, fit-sample, pre-production. Three rounds baked in. You get factory-floor video of every stitch.

Week 4 to 8
4

Production & QC

In-line inspection on every unit, AQL 1.5 final audit, freight booked through our forwarder at our rate. No surprises at the port.

From loose spec sheet to 3,200 units on the water.

Started with a 4-page spec and a material wishlist. We re-engineered the load-bearing system, filed two design patents, vetted three factories, and delivered first production run inside a year, roughly half the industry norm for a new tactical pack.

Founder

A Canadian who actually moved to Vietnam.

I got tired of watching good products die because the founder couldn't get a straight answer out of their factory. So I moved. Now I walk the floor every week.

Paul Bassoo has been designing and manufacturing soft goods in Ho Chi Minh City since 2018. Before XL Ovation, he led product development for outdoor and tactical brands across North America, and watched too many of them get burned by third-party agencies in Asia.

He wrote the books on it, literally. Product Development Mistake is the real story of how one bad decision nearly sank a fitness gear brand. His second book is a step-by-step path from idea to filed patent, without a big legal team.

FAQ

The questions founders always ask in the first call.

If yours isn't here, use the project form below and ask away.

We take on single-SKU projects starting at ~300 units for simple bags and ~500 units for technical packs. Below that, the tooling and sampling math stops making sense for the founder.
Yes. Everything (the patent, the CAD, the patterns, the molds, the factory relationships) is assigned to you in the contract. If we part ways you can walk the files across the street.
A sourcing agent takes 8 to 15% commission on your factory invoice, which you never see. We charge a flat engagement fee, show you the actual vendor invoice, and make nothing on the production run. Your incentive and ours are aligned from day one.
Yes, as long as they pass our audit. About 60% of existing-factory engagements survive the first visit; the rest we help you exit without a contract mess.
Vietnam is a Madrid Protocol signatory, which makes filing simpler than the reputation suggests. We file locally plus in your home market, and we never share CAD or patterns outside the factory floor.
Design + patent + sampling runs $18 to $42k depending on complexity. Production cost is whatever the factory invoice says. We don't mark it up. A line-item quote comes back 48 hours after the discovery call.
